Eleven jack stand recalls since 1990 cover about 4.8 million units, and nearly all of them describe the same failure: the stand can drop when it should hold. Three in 1991, from Kar-Rite, Tru Cut and Petersen, covered almost 3 million stands, and six in 2020 covered 1.84 million, most of them Harbor Freight's Pittsburgh 3-ton and 6-ton stands. This checker lists those and 12 more recalls of floor jacks, transmission jacks, car and motorcycle lifts, ramps and overhead storage hoists, 23 in all, built from NHTSA's recall database and the CPSC's recall notices. Type the item or model number printed on the stand, the box or the receipt.

The two big waves
In 1991 three jack stand recalls covered 2,951,355 stands. Tru Cut recalled 1,350,000 JS6000 stands made from April 1987 to June 1990 because the saddle allowed off-center loading and the base and inner tube were too weak; the remedy was redesigned replacement stands. Kar-Rite recalled 1,268,225 model 1060 stands built from 1979 to 1988 that could not hold their 3,500-pound rating off center, and the remedy was a warning sticker: do not load off center or above 2,000 pounds. Petersen recalled 333,130 four-leg 30-1080 stands rated 8,000 pounds and relabeled them at 6,500. Two of the three remedies were labels, so an old stand with one of those numbers is rated lower than its casting says.
In 2020 Harbor Freight recalled three Pittsburgh stands in five months. The 6-ton stands, item 61197, went first in March (454,000 units) for ratchet teeth that may not engage the pawl deeply enough. The 3-ton stands, items 56371 and 61196, followed in May (1,254,000 units) for the same fault. The replacement 3-ton stands, SKU 56373, were recalled in July (118,000 units) for a base weld that may fail. Walmart's Hyper Tough 2TJS and Summit Racing's SUM-918005 and SUM-918006 stands were recalled the same year.
How to check yours
The number to search is on a label on the stand, on the box or on the receipt: Harbor Freight's five-digit item numbers (56371, 61196, 61197, 56373), Walmart's 2TJS, Summit's SUM-918005, NAPA Evercraft's 776-2000. Type it, or the brand, into the checker. If nothing matches, search the brand and product on NHTSA's recall site and on CPSC.gov, because this list is not a complete record of every recall ever filed, and register new equipment with its maker so a future notice reaches you. A jack that came with a car is recalled with the car; search NHTSA by the vehicle's VIN for that one.
Who handles which recall
In this list the jack stands, floor jacks, transmission jacks and car and motorcycle lifts were recalled through NHTSA as motor vehicle equipment. The overhead storage hoists and racks, the loading ramps and the side-by-side and mower jacks were recalled through the CPSC. Both agencies publish each notice with the hazard and the remedy, and each card in the checker links to the one it came from.
What a recall list does not tell you
A stand that was never recalled can still drop a car if it is loaded off center, set on soft ground or asphalt, or rated below the load. The jack stand guide covers placement and ratings, and the jack stand buying guide compares current models. We call no stand safe; we say whether it was recalled and what the notice said.
How we built it
From NHTSA's recall flat files we kept the equipment campaigns that name a jack, a stand, a lift, a hoist or a ramp and read each one; from the CPSC's recall database we searched the same products and kept the garage ones. Each entry gives the recall number, the date, the item or model numbers, the units, the hazard and the remedy as the agency published them, with a link to the record. Checked October 12, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Are Harbor Freight jack stands recalled?
Three Pittsburgh jack stand recalls were issued in 2020: the 3-ton stands, items 56371 and 61196 (1,254,000 units), the replacement 3-ton stands, SKU 56373 (118,000), and the 6-ton stands, item 61197 (454,000). Harbor Freight's Central Hydraulics motorcycle lift, item 99887, was recalled in 2023.
What should I do with a recalled jack stand?
Stop using it and follow the remedy in the notice, which may be a refund, a gift card, a replacement or a new label. Do not put it back under a car while you wait for the replacement.
Where is the model number on a jack stand?
On a label or stamping on the stand, on the box, or on the receipt. Harbor Freight uses five-digit item numbers such as 56371 or 61197; other makers print a model such as 2TJS or SUM-918005.
What was the biggest jack stand recall?
Tru Cut's JS6000 recall in May 1991 covered 1,350,000 stands and replaced them with a redesigned stand. Kar-Rite's model 1060 recall the month before covered 1,268,225 stands and was fixed with a warning sticker.
Have floor jacks been recalled?
Yes. In this list, Craftsman's 1-1/2 ton aluminum floor jack with LED lighting, model 50242, was recalled in 2007 (15,000 units) because soft U-joint pins could break and leave the release valve stuck closed, so the jack could not be lowered.
Does this list include every recall?
No. It holds 23 recalls we found and read in NHTSA's and the CPSC's records. A product missing here may still have been recalled, so check both agencies directly for your brand and model.
