Jack stands are the only thing in the garage that holds a car over you, and the 2020 recall of 1.7 million Harbor Freight stands (NHTSA: the ratchet pawl did not seat deeply enough and the stands could collapse under load) is the reason this guide reads lock types before prices. The Pro-Lift T-6906D ($84) is the pick: 6 tons per pair, a cast ductile iron ratchet bar with a 16 to 23 1/2-inch range and a 10 1/2 by 8 7/8-inch base from Pro-Lift's own spec table, a handle lock and a mobility pin, and an ANSI/PALD claim; the Amazon Basics 3-ton pair ($38) names ASME PASE-2014 in its listing and is the car stand for the money; VEVOR's 6-ton ($51) and Yellow Jacket's 6-ton ($90, 15 1/2 to 23 3/8 inches) double-lock with a ratchet and a pin; two unbranded 6-ton pairs (rubber top, 15 to 23 inches, $58; 13-position, 17 1/4 to 23 7/8 inches, $56) are the budget double-pin stands; and Powerbuilt's 3-ton all-in-one ($98 to $100) is a bottle jack with a ratcheting stand built in, 11 to 21 inches, for trucks and RV levelling by its listing. Every pick gives capacity as the listing states it (per pair or per stand), height range, base and lock; the procedure is on its own page.

6 tons per pair, cast ductile iron ratchet bar, 16 to 23 1/2 in, 10 1/2 by 8 7/8 in base, handle lock plus mobility pin, meets or exceeds ANSI/PALD by Pro-Lift, $84.

Capacity
6 tons (Pro-Lift spec table, per pair)
Height range and base
16 to 23 1/2 in; base 10 1/2 by 8 7/8 in (Pro-Lift spec table; Amazon listing)
Lock type
Double locking: release handle lock plus mobility pin; cast ductile iron ratchet bar (per the Amazon listing)
Standard
Meets or exceeds ANSI/PALD (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • A maker's spec table with base size and range
  • Ductile iron ratchet bar
  • Pin and handle lock

Cons

  • 16 in minimum is tall for a low car
  • 20 left when read
  • PALD is the superseded name of the standard

Pro-Lift's spec table gives the T-6906D as 6 tons with a 10 1/2 by 8 7/8-inch base, a 16-inch minimum and 23 1/2-inch maximum; its listing adds stamped steel construction, a high-quality cast ductile iron ratchet bar, a double locking mechanism with handle lock and mobility pin, and an ANSI/PALD claim, at $83.99 the pair. Skip it under a lowered car, where 16 inches will not fit under the lift point.

2

Best 3-ton pair

Amazon Basics 3-Ton Steel Jack Stands (pair)

3 tons (6,000 lb) per pair, self-locking ratchet with no key, a listing that names ASME PASE-2014, a 1-year warranty, $38.

Pros

  • Names the current standard's 2014 edition
  • $38
  • Rustproof coating, capacity marked (listing)

Cons

  • Ratchet only: no pin as a second lock
  • 3 tons per pair is a car stand, not a truck stand
  • Range not in the bullets

Amazon Basics' listing: a pair of 3-ton (6,000-pound) stands with a self-locking ratchet that needs no key, a durable steel frame with a rustproof coating and an easy-to-read capacity, a statement that it meets the ASME PASE-2014 standard, and a 1-year limited warranty, at $37.78. A ratchet-only stand depends entirely on the pawl seating, which is what failed in the 2020 recall; look and listen for it each time. Skip it under a truck.

3

VEVOR 6-Ton Double Locking Jack Stands (pair)

VEVOR's 6-ton (13,000 lb) pair with a ratchet bar plus a pin, a cast iron bar, a wide pyramid base and triangular foot pads, $51.

Skip them until the seller states the height range, which the bullets do not.

4

Best 6-ton with a stated range

Yellow Jacket 6-Ton Double Locking Jack Stands (15.5 to 23.375 in)

Yellow Jacket's 6-ton (13,000 lb): 15 1/2 to 23 3/8 in, forged ductile iron ratchet bar, handle lock plus metal pins, wide pyramid base, 1-year warranty, $90.

15 1/2 to 23 3/8 in; wide pyramid base, large saddle (per the Amazon listing)
Lock type
Double: handle-adjusted locking ratchet bar and metal safety pins (per the Amazon listing)
Standard
Listing says it meets US safety standards without naming one; 1-year limited warranty

Pros

  • Range stated
  • Forged one-piece ductile iron bar (listing)
  • Pins and handle lock

Cons

  • $90, the most here
  • Standard not named
  • Listing figures only

Yellow Jacket's listing: 6 tons (13,000 pounds), a 15 1/2 to 23 3/8-inch range, stamped steel with a wide pyramid base and large top saddle, a ratchet bar forged in one piece from ductile iron with a sawtooth design, a handle lock and metal safety pins, a 1-year limited warranty, and a claim to meet US safety standards without naming them, at $89.99. Skip it if the unnamed standard bothers you; Pro-Lift names one for less.

5

Best budget 6-ton with rubber tops

6-Ton Jack Stands with Double Pin Locking and Rubber Cover (pair)

An unbranded 6-ton pair with double pin locking, rubber saddle covers, a large foot base and a stated 15 to 23 in range, $58.

Capacity
6 tons, 13,200 lb per pair (per the Amazon listing, which also prints 11 to 23 in and 3 to 6 tons elsewhere in its bullets)
Height range and base
15 to 23 in in the title, 11 to 23 in a bullet; oversized foot base (per the Amazon listing)
Lock type
Double pin locking (per the Amazon listing)
Standard
Listing claims rigorous safety standards without naming one

Pros

  • Rubber tops protect pinch welds
  • Pins
  • $58

Cons

  • The listing contradicts itself on range and capacity
  • Unbranded
  • No standard named

The listing: alloy steel stands with rubber tops, double locking pins, an oversized base, a 15 to 23-inch range in the title and 11 to 23 in a bullet, and a capacity of 13,200 pounds per pair in the title that a bullet widens to 3 to 6 tons, at $57.99. The contradiction is the review: a stand whose listing cannot agree with itself on its range and rating is one to buy only after the seller resolves it in writing. The 13-position 6-ton pair ($55.99) states a 17 1/4 to 23 7/8-inch range and 13,200 pounds per stand with a ratchet bar and removable pin.

6

Best jack-and-stand in one

Powerbuilt 3-Ton All-in-One Bottle Jack and Jack Stand (11 to 21 in)

Powerbuilt's 3-ton bottle jack with a built-in ratcheting stand, 11 to 21 in, wide base, ANSI claim, 1-year warranty, $98 to $100.

Capacity
3 tons, 6,000 lb (per the Amazon listing; one listing's bullet says 3,000 lb, read it)
Height range and base
11 to 21 in; wide base against sinking on soft ground (per the Amazon listing)
Lock type
Built-in ratcheting safety bar that locks the raised position (per the Amazon listing)
Standard
Meets or exceeds ANSI standards, unnamed; 1-year warranty (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Lifts and holds in one column
  • 11 in minimum reaches truck frames
  • Wide base for RV levelling by the listing

Cons

  • One listing's bullet gives 3,000 lb against the title's 6,000; read it
  • A bottle jack's small saddle on a car's pinch weld
  • Not a replacement for a pair of stands under a car

Powerbuilt's listings: a bottle jack and jack stand combined, with a built-in ratcheting safety bar that locks the raised position, an 11 to 21-inch range, a wide base against sinking on soft surfaces, an ANSI claim and a 1-year warranty, at $98.39 and $99.99; one listing's bullet gives a 3,000-pound capacity against the 3-ton title. It is for a truck frame, an RV or a trailer; two of them are not a pair of stands under a car. Skip it for a lowered car.

How we chose

Stands sold in the US, judged on rated capacity as stated (per pair or per stand), minimum and maximum height, base size, lock type (ratchet only, ratchet plus pin, double pin), bar material, the standard the listing names, warranty and price (October 9, 2026); Pro-Lift from its spec table and listing, the rest from Amazon listings. The NHTSA advisory on the 2020 Harbor Freight recall is the reason lock type leads.

Per pair or per stand

Pro-Lift's table rates the T-6906D at 6 tons as a pair; Amazon Basics says 3 tons, 6,000 pounds, per pair; the 13-position 6-ton listing says 13,200 pounds per stand; the rubber-top listing says per pair in its title and something else in a bullet. Read which, because a 3-ton pair is 3,000 pounds a stand and a corner of a 4,500-pound SUV with one end lifted is more than a quarter of it. Six-ton stands under a truck, 3-ton under a car, and never one stand under a car by itself.

Lock types

Ratchet only (Amazon Basics): the pawl is the lock, and it has to seat fully in a tooth every time. Ratchet plus pin (VEVOR, Yellow Jacket, Pro-Lift, the 13-position): a pin through the column backs the pawl. Double pin (the rubber-top pair): pins only. The recall was a pawl that did not seat; a pin is the second thing holding the car. Whatever the type, the makers' manuals say to check the lock before the weight goes on, and the procedure has the shake test.

Height

Minimum height is the limit under a low car: 15 to 17 inches on the 6-ton stands here will not reach a lowered coupe's lift point, which is why the 3-ton Amazon Basics (range unstated) and a low-profile jack are the car set and the 6-ton pairs the truck set. Maximum height (23 to 24 inches here) is a truck's drooped-wheel height; the Powerbuilt reaches 21.

Standards and the recall

ASME PASE is the standard for automotive stands; ANSI/PALD was its earlier name. A standard named in a listing is the maker's claim. NHTSA's May 28, 2020 advisory: Harbor Freight's Pittsburgh Automotive 3-ton (item numbers 61196, 56371) and 6-ton (61197) stands, more than 1.7 million made between December 2012 and March 2020, may collapse under load; injuries were reported; owners were told to stop using them and offered refunds. None of the stands here is a Pittsburgh stand; the lesson applies to every stand with a ratchet. The jack stand recall checker lists that recall and the other jack stand recalls since 1990 by item number.

What to skip

Skip any stand whose listing contradicts itself on capacity or range until the seller resolves it. Skip a stand that has ever slipped. Skip 3-ton stands under a truck. Skip a bottle-jack stand as one of a pair under a car. And skip the floor jack as the thing holding the car, which is the floor jack guide's first line too.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity jack stands do I need?

Above the share of the vehicle the stands carry, reading whether the rating is per pair (Pro-Lift's 6 tons, Amazon Basics' 3 tons) or per stand. 3-ton pairs for cars, 6-ton for trucks and SUVs, always in pairs.

Which jack stands have a pin lock?

Pro-Lift T-6906D (handle lock plus mobility pin), VEVOR 6-ton (ratchet plus pin), Yellow Jacket 6-ton (handle lock plus metal pins), the 13-position 6-ton (removable pin) and the rubber-top pair (double pin). Amazon Basics is ratchet only.

Which jack stands meet ASME PASE?

Amazon Basics' listing names ASME PASE-2014; Pro-Lift's names ANSI/PALD, the standard's earlier name. The others claim unnamed standards or none. These are makers' claims; we verified no marks.

What was the Harbor Freight jack stand recall?

NHTSA's May 28, 2020 advisory: more than 1.7 million Pittsburgh Automotive 3-ton (items 61196, 56371) and 6-ton (61197) stands that may collapse under load, in recalls 20E016 and 20E027, with injuries reported and refunds offered. The cause was ratchet teeth that did not engage the pawl deeply enough.

How low do jack stands go?

The 6-ton stands here start at 15 to 17 inches (Yellow Jacket 15.5, Pro-Lift 16, the 13-position 17.25), which is above a lowered car's lift point; the Amazon Basics 3-ton does not state its range. Low cars need a stand whose minimum fits under the point.

Is a bottle jack with a built-in stand as good as jack stands?

Powerbuilt's all-in-one lifts and locks in one column with an 11 to 21-inch range, for truck frames, RVs and trailers by its listing. Under a car it is one column with a small saddle; two stands on the maker's points are the standard the sources describe.
