A wheel balancer is the step after the tire changer that most home garages skip and then feel at 65 mph. Two kinds fit a home garage. A bubble balancer stands the wheel horizontally on a cone and shows static imbalance with a spirit level; you move weights until the bubble centres. A balancing stand for motorcycles holds the wheel on an axle between cones and lets it settle heavy-side down. Neither measures dynamic imbalance (side to side), which is what a spinning machine like the XK 690 or KATOOL B700 does, and which the balancer listings themselves say when they call bubble balancing static. The ATPEAM bubble balancer ($55) is the pick for a listing with full dimensions (24 inches tall, 11.5-inch base, 0.813-inch rod, 1.495-inch hub, 11 pounds); the NYXOVA ($58) and unbranded portable balancer ($58) are the same tool for 1 1/2 to 4-inch hubs; the VIVOHOME motorcycle stand ($45) and a second motorcycle stand ($47) balance bike wheels on four bearings; and the XK 690 (44-inch wheels, 155 pounds, 6 to 9-second cycle, in the $1,529 combo) and KATOOL B700 ($1,599 combo) are the machines. Every pick gives hub range, dimensions and what it measures, and says who should skip it.

Skip bubble balancers for wide, heavy truck wheels, where the bubble's resolution and the cone's fit run out.

2

Best motorcycle balancer

VIVOHOME Motorcycle Wheel Balancing Stand

VIVOHOME's motorcycle balancing stand: heavy iron frame, adjustable centering cones on a shaft that rides on four bearings, $45.

Hub range
Adjustable cones on the central axis for different wheels (per the Amazon listing)
Dimensions
Not stated in the bullets
What it measures
Static balance by settling; the listing says static and dynamic, which a settling stand cannot measure (our reading)
Build
Heavy-duty iron, black coating; four bearings (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Four bearings
  • Adjustable cones
  • $45

Cons

  • Static only in practice, whatever the title says
  • Dimensions not stated
  • Listing figures only

VIVOHOME's listing: a heavy-duty iron balancing stand with a black coating, a wheel-centering shaft on four bearings to remove friction, adjustable centering cones for different wheels, for motorcycle wheel installation and balancing, at $44.99; the second motorcycle stand ($47.49) lists a steel frame, adjustable cones and the same claim of static and dynamic balancing. A stand that lets a wheel settle finds the heavy spot; dynamic balance needs the wheel spun and measured in two planes. Skip either for a car wheel; the axle and cones are motorcycle-sized.

What it measures
Dynamic and static, Alu 1 to 3 and motorcycle modes; 6 to 9 s cycle (per the Amazon listing)
Power
110 V (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Dynamic balancing
  • Comes with the changer
  • Motorcycle mode

Cons

  • Only as a combo
  • Freight
  • Listing figures only

XK's listing (in the changer combo): the 690 balancer preset to US measurements, 44-inch maximum wheel, 155-pound maximum, a 6 to 9-second cycle, standard dynamic and static modes, Alu 1 to 3 and motorcycle modes, three cones and a quick-release nut, 110 V, $1,529 with the 580 changer. The KATOOL B700 in its combo ($1,599) lists a pressure-sensor design and several balancing methods for different rims with a 12-month parts warranty. The tire changer guide has both combos. Skip a machine if the bubble balancer's static result is good enough for your speeds and wheels.

How we chose

Balancers sold in the US for home use, judged on hub or cone range, dimensions, build, what they measure as the listing states it, and price (October 9, 2026), from their Amazon listings. No listing here names a standard. One portable balancer listing (B0D14HC37G) could not be read when we tried and is not included.

Static and dynamic

Static imbalance is a heavy spot on the wheel's circumference; a bubble balancer or a settling stand finds it and one weight opposite fixes it. Dynamic imbalance is weight offset across the wheel's width, which makes a wheel wobble side to side at speed; only a spinning machine measures it, and it corrects with weights on both the inner and outer rim. Narrow motorcycle wheels and narrow car wheels have little width to be dynamically out; wide, heavy wheels have more. The listings that call a settling stand a dynamic balancer are using the word loosely.

Using a bubble balancer

The floor under it must be level, because the bubble measures the wheel against gravity through the stand; shim the base until the bubble centres with no wheel on. The cone must centre the hub, which is what the 1 1/2 to 4-inch range is for. Weights go opposite the low side and the wheel is turned a quarter and checked again. It is a ten-minute job per wheel and the result is a static balance, which is what the shop's machine would also report as the first number.

What to skip

Skip a bubble balancer on an unlevel floor. Skip a motorcycle stand for a car wheel. Skip believing a settling stand measures dynamic balance. And skip the balance altogether only if you enjoy the vibration. The floor jack and stands that get the wheel off the car are the other half of the job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I balance tires at home?

Statically, with a bubble balancer ($55 to $58) on a level floor, or a motorcycle balancing stand ($45 to $47). Dynamic balancing needs a spinning machine such as the XK 690, sold in a $1,529 combo with its changer.

How does a bubble balancer work?

The wheel sits horizontally on a cone over a spirit level; the heavy side tips the bubble and weights go opposite until it centres. It measures static imbalance only, and the floor has to be level.

What hub sizes do bubble balancers fit?

1 1/2 to 4-inch hubs on the NYXOVA and unbranded balancers by their listings; ATPEAM lists a 1.495-inch hub on a 0.813-inch rod with a cone set.

Does a motorcycle balancing stand do dynamic balancing?

No, whatever the listing title says: a wheel settling on an axle finds its heavy spot, which is static balance. Dynamic balance needs the wheel spun and measured in two planes.

Which balancer handles truck wheels?

The machines: XK's 690 lists 44-inch wheels and 155 pounds. Bubble balancers run out of cone fit and resolution on wide, heavy wheels.

Do I need to balance after a tire change?

A new tire on a wheel is a new heavy spot. Static balance on a bubble balancer is the minimum; the vibration you feel at speed is the alternative.
