Changing a tire at home means breaking the bead (the seal between tire and rim), levering the tire off and on, and then balancing the wheel, and the tools scale from a $40 lever to a $2,895 machine. The Ranger R745 (BendPak's brochure: 110 to 175 PSI air, 110/220 V single phase, 10 to 16-inch outside and 12 to 20-inch inside clamping, 36-inch maximum tire, 466 pounds; about $2,895 at dealers) is the pick for anyone who changes tires every month; the XK 580 changer and 690 balancer combo ($1,529, 110 V, 10 to 18-inch outside and 12 to 20 inside, 5,600 pounds of bead-break force at 120 to 145 PSI) and the KATOOL KT-T800/B700 combo ($1,599, 12-month parts warranty) are the Amazon machines; KATOOL's KT-1030P mini ($365, 10 to 21-inch rims, 39-inch wheels, 110 pounds) is the compact machine; the VEVOR ($70) and TUFFIOM ($61) manual changers handle 8 to 16-inch tires with a bead breaker bar and a mount post; the duck-head kit ($40) upgrades a manual changer's mount; and the BeadBuster XB-450i ($149, made in the USA) and VEVOR slide-hammer bead breaker ($47) break beads on wheels the changers cannot clamp. Every pick gives rim range, air, motor and the standard figure its maker or listing states, and says who should skip it; the balancers are the next page.

The TUFFIOM ($60.79) is the same type at about 32 pounds with three bead-breaker positions for 8 to 16-inch tires and a locking collar; an unbranded 8 to 21-inch changer ($61.50) extends the range and says it works without a compressor. The duck-head kit ($39.99) replaces the mount bar on a manual changer with a plastic duck head that spares alloy rims. Skip the manual changers for anything over 16 inches unless the 21-inch unit's seller confirms it.

Air

The machines are air tools first: the R745 wants 110 to 175 PSI and the XK 120 to 145, which is a compressor that holds those pressures under a bead-breaker stroke, not one that peaks at them. BendPak publishes no CFM figure for the R745 that we found. The manual changers and bead breakers need none, which is most of the reason they exist. The electrical guide covers the compressor's circuit.

Rims

A machine clamps the rim from outside or inside, and the two ranges are what fits: BendPak's sheet and three dealers print the R745's ranges differently, so the only check is your rims against the maker's written figures. Alloy rims want plastic or nylon contact (the duck-head kit on a manual changer; the XK ships a steel head and clamp protectors). The manual changers' 16-inch limit is the common car and small SUV range; 20-inch truck wheels are machine work or a bead breaker and tire irons on the floor.

Bead breakers

Breaking the bead is the hard part, and the force stated (5,600 pounds on the XK) is why machines do it with air. A manual changer's post lever does it with body weight on car tires; BeadBuster's clamp-and-blade does it with hand tools on wheels that will not fit a post, which is why ATV and motorcycle owners buy it; the slide hammer does it with impact. After the bead, the tire still comes off and goes on with irons and lubricant, and goes back to a balancer.

What to skip

Skip a machine without a compressor sized for it. Skip a manual changer on alloy rims without a duck head. Skip any machine whose clamping ranges the seller will not confirm against your rims in writing. And skip the tire change without the balance after it, which the balancer guide covers from $45.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my own tires at home?

With a manual changer ($61 to $70) for 8 to 16-inch tires, a bead breaker and tire irons, and a balancer after; a machine like the Ranger R745 or the XK combo does it with air. The bead is the hard part and the balance is the step not to skip.

What air pressure does a tire changer need?

BendPak's R745 brochure says 110 to 175 PSI; the XK 580 listing says 120 to 145 PSI with 5,600 pounds of bead-break force. Manual changers and bead breakers need no air.

What is the best manual tire changer?

VEVOR's ($70, Q235B forged steel, rounded contact parts) or TUFFIOM's ($61, three bead-breaker positions, locking collar), both for 8 to 16-inch tires; add the $40 duck-head kit for alloy rims.

How do I break a bead on an ATV or motorcycle tire?

BeadBuster's XB-450i bolts to the rim and pushes the bead down with hand tools, on any small wheel up to a 32-inch tire, by its listing; VEVOR's slide hammer does it by impact for $47.

Is the Ranger R745 worth it for a home garage?

At about $2,895 and 466 pounds, with 110 to 175 PSI of air, it is a shop machine; for a home garage that changes a set of tires a few times a year, a manual changer and a bead breaker do it for under $250. BendPak's brochure has the figures.

Which tire changer handles 20-inch wheels?

The machines: Ranger R745 (12 to 20 inside), XK 580 (12 to 20 inside, 10 to 18 outside), KATOOL KT-1030P (10 to 21 rims). Manual changers stop at 16 inches except the unbranded 8 to 21-inch unit.
