Best Shop Presses (2026): 12 and 20 Ton H-Frames, by Ram and Working Range

No retailer or brand sees our picks before they are published or has any say in them. How we choose.

A shop press pushes bearings, bushings and ball joints in and out with a bottle-jack ram in an H-frame, and its tonnage is the ram's. The VEVOR 20-ton H-frame with a two-speed pump ($580) is the pick for a stated 2.56 to 40.5-inch working range in nine settings, a pressure gauge, a 48 mm punch and a fast-approach two-stage ram; the VEVOR 20-ton pneumatic ($550) adds an air-assist pump with a quick connector and a triangular base brace; the VEVOR 12-ton ($139) is the bench-height press with a 1.6 to 27.8-inch range and 0.2-inch steel; and the Garvee presses ($183 to $190) are here with a warning, because their titles say 20 tons and their bullets say a 6-ton bottle jack with a relief valve that opens at 6 tons. Every pick gives range, ram, gauge, relief valve and steel from its listing and says who should skip it; a press is a tool that stores energy, and the makers' manuals, not this page, say how to stand at it.

The one to read twice

Garvee H-Frame Hydraulic Shop Press (titled 20 ton; 6-ton jack and relief valve per the bullets)

Garvee's presses are titled 20 tons; their bullets describe a 6-ton bottle jack and a relief valve that opens above 6 tons, a 1.6 to 27.8 in table and 0.2 in steel, at $183 to $190. They are 6-ton presses by their own description.

Tonnage
20 tons in the title; a 6-ton bottle jack and a relief valve activating above 6 tons in the bullets (per the Amazon listings)
Working range
1.6 to 27.8 in; two movable press plates (per the Amazon listing)
Pump and gauge
Bottle jack; precision return springs; polished ram; relief valve at 6 tons; gauge not stated (per the Amazon listing)
Frame
0.2 in carbon steel H-frame, reinforced base (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • The frame and range match the VEVOR 12-ton
  • Return springs and a polished ram stated
  • $183

Cons

  • A 20-ton title on a 6-ton jack
  • The relief valve opens at 6 tons, so 20 tons is never reached
  • Listing figures only

Garvee's listings (two of them, $189.99 and $182.99) are titled 20-ton H-frame presses and describe, in their bullets, a strong 6-ton bottle jack, a relief valve that activates automatically when pressure exceeds 6 tons, a 1.6 to 27.8-inch adjustable worktable with two movable press plates, precision return springs, a polished piston ram and a 0.2-inch carbon steel frame; one of them says "6 to 20 ton" in a heading. A press whose relief valve opens at 6 tons is a 6-ton press, which is enough for wheel bearings and bushings and is not what the title sells. An unbranded 20-ton press ($157.99) lists a 20-ton force with a safety valve and few other figures. Skip the Garvee if you were buying the 20 in the title; buy it if a 6-ton bench press at $183 is what you need, knowing that.

How we chose

H-frame presses sold in the US, judged on stated tonnage and whether the bullets support it, working range and settings, pump type, gauge, relief valve, steel thickness, base bracing and price (October 9, 2026), from their Amazon listings. These are the listings' figures, not our measurements; the contradictions we found are reported as found.

Tonnage

The ram's rating is the press's, and the relief valve's opening pressure is the real maximum. A 20-ton press is sized for truck wheel bearings and pressed-in axle assemblies; a 6 to 12-ton press does car wheel bearings, bushings, ball joints and U-joints. Most home garages use under 10 tons for everything they ever press, which is why the 12-ton VEVOR is on this list and why the Garvee's 6-ton reality is not disqualifying, only mislabelled. A gauge (VEVOR's two-speed press) shows the force and is the one feature that tells you a bearing is seized rather than moving.

Daylight and bed

Working range is the distance from the ram's nose to the bed at its lowest setting: 27.8 inches on the bench presses, 40.5 on the VEVOR floor presses, which is the difference between pressing a bearing from a hub and pressing a long axle or a tall knuckle. None of the listings states bed width or plate size; ask the seller. The H-frame's base bracing (VEVOR's triangular braces) is what stops a tall press walking when the ram releases.

What to skip

Skip believing a title over a bullet. Skip pressing without the plates under the part and the ram square on it, which is the manuals' first instruction. Skip a bench press for a long axle. And skip standing in line with a part that can let go; the makers' manuals say where to stand, and a press is the tool in this guide that fires parts across the room. A press sits beside the engine stand and the parts washer on the rebuild list in the buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons does a home shop press need?

6 to 12 tons does car wheel bearings, bushings, ball joints and U-joints; 20 tons is for truck bearings and axle assemblies. The ram's rating and the relief valve's opening pressure are the real figures, not the title.

Is the Garvee 20-ton press really 20 tons?

Its listings describe a 6-ton bottle jack and a relief valve that opens above 6 tons, with 1.6 to 27.8 inches of range and 0.2-inch steel, at $183 to $190. By its own bullets it is a 6-ton press with a 20-ton title.

What is a two-speed press pump?

VEVOR's 20-ton press uses a 2-ton large ram to bring the nose down to the work quickly and a 20-ton small ram to deliver the force, with a gauge to read it, by its listing.

Do I need a pneumatic shop press?

VEVOR's pneumatic 20-ton uses a compressor through a quick connector to do the pumping; the manual two-speed press does the same work by hand for $30 more. Air saves effort on repeated pressing.

How much working height does a shop press need?

27.8 inches (VEVOR 12-ton, Garvee) covers bearings and bushings; 40.5 inches (VEVOR 20-ton presses) covers long axles and tall assemblies. Bed width is not stated in any listing here; ask the seller.

Why does a press have a gauge?

To see the force applied; a seized bearing shows as pressure climbing with no movement, which is when the part is about to let go. Only VEVOR's two-speed 20-ton lists a gauge here.
