Every 2-ton engine hoist is a 1,000-pound hoist at full reach. The listings here all say so in their own words: four boom positions rated 2, 1.5, 1 and 0.5 tons from shortest to longest, and the SUNEX 5222's dealer table pairs them with 27, 34, 41.5 and 48-inch booms. The SUNEX 5222 ($809) is the pick for a maker's page, dual pump pistons, 4.7-inch legs and a chainless hook; the Garvee 2-ton ($200) and its lever version ($169) are the folding hoists for the budget; the 2-ton hoist with a built-in leveler ($220) and the DEXSO 2-in-1 ($240) fold the leveler into the boom; the $116 folding 2-ton is the cheapest with six wheels; the 1.5-ton ($188) is the compact one. Levelers: the Big Red 1,500 lb ($32), OTC 4305 ($116), OMT 4,000 lb ($66), Oberg chainless sling ($95) and Yellow Jacket 1,500 lb ($46). Engine weights come from the engine makers (Ford Performance lists its Gen 4 5.0L crate engine at 453 pounds without the accessory drive), and the hoist calculator says which boom position carries yours.

6

Best leveler

Big Red 1,500 lb Engine Load Leveler

Big Red's 1,500 lb (3/4 ton) leveler: structural steel, three chain-mount positions, four 14 in chains with L-brackets, a crank-handle threaded shaft, $32.

  • Chains, which the Oberg sling does without

Big Red's listing: a 3/4-ton (1,500-pound) leveler in structural steel, fully adjustable with three chain-mount holes, four 14-inch chains with L-brackets, and a crank handle on a threaded shaft, at $32.22. The Yellow Jacket 1,500 lb ($45.99) is the same layout with a ball-bearing handle; the OTC 4305 ($115.98) is the 1,500-pound tool-brand version with adjustable horizontal tilt; the OMT 4,000 lb ($65.99) is the one rated for an engine and transmission together in AISI 1045 steel; and the Oberg Tilt Lift ($94.95) is the chainless sling rated 2,000 pounds and tested to 6,000 by its listing, tilting 45 degrees each way with a ratchet. Skip the 1,500-pound levelers for a big-block with the transmission on.

How we chose

Hoists sold in the US with stated boom ratings, judged on those ratings by position, leg clearance, maximum height, pump, folding, casters, warranty and price (October 9, 2026); SUNEX from its page and a dealer table, the rest from Amazon listings. Levelers by rated capacity, construction and price. Engine weights only from engine makers.

The boom rule

The rating printed on the box is the retracted boom's. The listings here all give the same four steps (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 tons), and the SUNEX dealer table adds that the extended boom is 21 inches longer and 18 inches higher than the retracted one. The reach you need to clear a radiator support is usually the 1,000-pound position; the calculator takes the engine's weight from its maker (Ford Performance: 453 pounds for its Gen 4 5.0L crate engine without accessory drive, 444 for the earlier M-6007-M50) plus the leveler and rigging, and says which position carries it. OSHA's jack rule has the same spirit: the rated load is marked on the equipment and is the limit.

Legs

The hoist's legs have to go under the car's front end to get the hook over the engine. SUNEX states 4.7 inches; no import states its leg height, and a lowered car or a deep front air dam is where that matters. Measure your car's bumper height before buying a hoist that does not say.

Levelers

A leveler hangs between the hook and the engine and tilts it with a crank so the transmission tail clears the firewall on the way out and lines up on the way in. The 1,500-pound chain levelers (Big Red, Yellow Jacket, OTC) are rated for most engines alone; the OMT at 4,000 pounds and the Oberg at 2,000 are rated for engine and transmission together by their listings. The leveler's own weight counts against the boom rating, and none of these listings states it.

What to skip

Skip lifting at a position whose rating is below engine plus leveler plus transmission. Skip a hoist whose legs will not go under your car. Skip rolling a loaded hoist over a crack, a drain or a threshold. And skip the headline rating as the figure that matters; the extended boom's is.

Frequently asked questions

How much can a 2-ton engine hoist lift at full extension?

Half a ton, 1,000 pounds. Every 2-ton hoist here lists four positions at 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 tons from longest to shortest boom; the SUNEX 5222's dealer table pairs them with 48, 41.5, 34 and 27-inch booms.

Is a 1-ton engine hoist enough?

Only at its short boom for a light engine: a 1-ton hoist carries 500 pounds at full reach by the same four-step pattern, and Ford Performance's 5.0L crate engine alone is 444 to 453 pounds before the leveler and transmission. A 2-ton hoist is the home garage size.

Do I need an engine leveler?

For any engine with a transmission attached or a tail that has to clear the firewall, yes: the leveler tilts the engine with a crank. Big Red's 1,500 lb leveler is $32; the OMT 4,000 lb and Oberg 2,000 lb are the ones rated for engine and transmission together by their listings.

Which engine hoist fits under a low car?

SUNEX states 4.7-inch legs on the 5222. None of the import listings states leg height; measure your bumper and ask the seller.

How much does a V8 engine weigh?

Use the engine maker's figure: Ford Performance lists its Gen 4 5.0L crate engine at 453 pounds without the front accessory drive and the earlier M-6007-M50 at 444. We found no weight on the Chevrolet Performance LS3 or LT1 pages we read and print no forum figures.

Do engine hoists fold for storage?

Every 2-ton hoist here folds by its listing (SUNEX, Garvee, the leveler hoists, the $116 hoist); the 1.5-ton listing does not say. Folded, the legs swing up and the hoist stands against a wall.
